I understand also that al is a combination of a + el once provided prior to a noun, but in what cases would you use it in front of a verb, for instance

"Al llegar al tercer semaforo..."

*

*

"Al" is greatly used once you are going to use "when" (and also some other times "upon"), and also it need to be offered before a verb. The verb must be on the infinitive develop (this suggests that it"s not a personal form of the verb, and also ends with "-ar", "-er" or "-ir".

In this context al is not a contractivity of the preposition a and the definite article el, however a preplace in its very own ideal.

When supplied before a verb in the infinitive (like in your example), the preposition al is offered favor the English preposition upon or on in the same context. It might aternatively be analyzed by a expression such as at the time of.

That is to say, it is offered to introduce an something which occurs concurrently through, or automatically after, the activity explained by the verb.

So to take your instance,"Al llegar al tercer semaforo..." = "Upon arriving at the third website traffic light..."Meaning that as soon as the topic arrives at the 3rd web traffic light, "..." will happen.

Another instance can be"perdió el equipaje al cambiarse de tren" = "he lost his luggage when he changed (or at the time of changing) trains".

"Al llegar" is the exact same as "cuanperform llegues", which suggests "when you reach".

The simplest interpretation that functions 99% of the time is "upon + verb"

Examples:

"Al cambiarse la ropa" = Upon altering his/her apparel...

"Al ir al baño" = Upon going to the restroom...

"Al besar a la chica" = Upon kissing the girl...

Al many always be followed by the infinitive, yet it works well in a surpincreasing number of instances and can make your sentences quite flexible.

You deserve to think that "al llegar" is a propositional expression in which "llegar", being an infinitive, is used as a name, because of the write-up "el". The preposition "a" provides this construct an adverbial taste.

But we also usage various other prepositions: - "Con el batir de palmas, el actor salió de escena"- "Entre el ir y venir, ya no sé ni dónde estoy" - "Hasta el andar me quita el aliento"
